Lenna Howerton was born Nov. 27, 1938, to Emory and Alice Thomas in Las Animas, Colo., and died peacefully in Cle Elum, Wash., on Dec. 11, 2020.
Lenna’s greatest joy was having children; Richard Howerton, Mary Walling (Dale), Pamela Leinweber (Larry), David Howerton, Deborah Woods (Terry), Carol Parsons (Rick), and Eugene Dickens. She was also a very proud grandmother of 13 and great grandmother of 19.
Lenna was born in Las Animas, Colo., where she grew up on a homestead with her eight sisters, one brother, and attended a one-room schoolhouse. She moved to Washington state in 2014 but her heart remained in Colorado where she had lived for 75 years. She married Howard Howerton on May 27, 1957, and were together for 49 years until his passing in 2006.
After working 29 years as an administrative assistant, Lenna retired from the VA Hospital in Fort Lyon, Colo., in 2000. After retirement you could find Lenna meeting with a local craft group, attending a weekly Bible study, going to "exercise" at the local senior center, or working on her latest quilt project.
Lenna is survived by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and five sisters. Her husband, parents, and three sisters left this earth before her.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on May 29, 2021 at the First Presbyterian Church in Las Animas, Colo. Please consider donation to Ruth’s Home, LLC, 304 E. Third St. Cle Elum, WA., 98926, which so graciously cared for her over the past four years, or to the Bent County Historical Society 560 Bent Ave., Las Animas, CO., 81054, where her history began.
