Sarah Abdulla Muniz was born August 30, 1931 in Brawley, California to John and Juanita (Chavez) Abdulla. Sarah was their first daughter of three daughters along with two older brothers and two younger brothers. She is preceded in death by her siblings Allie, Esmile, Albert, Johnnie, and Carmen.
Sarah and her siblings were orphaned when she was 14 years old. Her and her younger siblings were split apart with the youngest three going to an orphanage. Sarah and her brother, Albert were taken in by her mother’s brother, Frank Chavez from Rocky Ford, Colorado.
When Sarah met Chris Muniz from Las Animas, Colorado they fell in love and were married March 20, 1950 and shortly afterwards they rescued two of her three youngest siblings, Johnnie and Julia from the orphanage but Carmen, the baby had already been adopted out. Sarah and Chris raised both Johnnie and Julia and started their own family as well. Sarah and Chris had 3 boys; David, Michael and Christopher, each approximately two years apart and then almost 6 years later had Nathan. At that point with four rowdy boys they decided they were done. But God’s plans are always greater than ours, so after much finger pointing at each other on just how another baby came along, they were blessed with the jewel of the family, their only daughter Diana.
Sarah was a devout Catholic who insisted that all her children were raised to know and have a relationship with God. Sometimes their participation in that effort was not as well received. One time she was informed that Michael (son # 2) had skipped Catechism Class. When he arrived home afterwards and was questioned “What did you learn this evening? He quickly answered “I learned about God!”
To Sarah’s delight, all five of her children did learn about God and they all do have that relationship that she so desired for them. Some of them just took a little longer to get there.
Sarah loved all of her children unconditionally, as well as her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She prayed for all of them daily, and I’m sure for some of them hourly. She never gave up on them no matter how far they strayed or what path they chose. So, they just want to say thank you Mom.
And thank you Jesus for calling her home on September 16, 2019 from a time of pain and discomfort; into an eternal time of peace and joy, in accordance with your promises.
Sarah is survived by her children, David (Carrie) Muniz, Michael (Theresa) Muniz, Christopher (Rebecca) Muniz, Nathan Muniz, and Diana (Phil) Shaufler; sister, Julia Torres; 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Juanita Abdulla; first husband, Chris Muniz; second husband, Harold McKinney; brothers, Esmile Abdulla, Allie and wife, Lucy Abdulla, Albert Abdulla, and John and wife, Sharon Abdulla; and sister Carmen.
